Proposed Seminar Program

This seminar is for teachers of Languages other than English.

What teachers say about this seminar: please see below the proposed seminar program.

Is your school introducing iPads into classrooms? Are your Language classrooms changing shape before your eyes? No paper, no pens, no textbooks on desks? Immediate and constant access to the Internet and the world? The excitement of these possibilities, most likely mixed with a feeling of apprehension about classroom management and the pressure to use this new tool about which students are so excited?

This introductory session is for Language teachers working for the first time using iPads or who will be expected to do so in the near future. The day will focus on the development of teacher knowledge and confidence in four main areas:

• Applications on iPads: ideas that can be used simply and effectively to engage students, enhance language skills and impact positively on your LOTE program

• Access to the Internet: approaches to teaching and learning that offer students opportunities for real-life and meaningful language-learning experiences

• Lesson planning: designing lessons that ensure smooth transition from one task to the next and the effective (and efficient) use of iPads to enhance, consolidate or extend student language skills

• Behaviour management: strategies for coping positively and successfully with this change to the classroom dynamic; approaches to classroom and lesson organisation that ensure control and on-task behaviour, whilst always encouraging students’ enthusiasm for ICT and their new learning tool

The iPad is a wonderful tool for developing students’ linguistic capacity. It can be used for introducing language, consolidating and advancing, as well as an excellent tool for reflection and improvement of students’ personal learning strategies.

This session will not be looking at high-level use of technology that leaves teachers feeling unsure or inadequate – the aim of this workshop is to provide Languages teachers with the key ingredients to enjoying working with iPads and to help teachers feel comfortable and confident using iPads frequently and consistently in their classrooms in easy, engaging ways.

IMPORTANT: In order to be able to participate actively in this seminar, it is essential that you bring a fully charged iPad and your password to the Apple iTunes Store (for the downloading of the free apps required in the seminar).
